As part of our commitment to furthering open-source development, we’ve partnered with CYBERTEC to sponsor their development of zheap for PostgreSQL.

As games grow ever larger and more demanding on infrastructure, one of the common hot points is that of runaway database storage growth. At Heroic Labs we’ve powered games with over 75M (so far!) user accounts and terabytes worth of storage on a per-game basis. With this, it’s important to focus on database maintenance in order to allow for further scalability.

zheap is a way to keep table bloat under control by implementing a storage engine capable of running UPDATE-intense workloads more efficiently, reduce writes as much as possible, and to reuse space more quickly to provide peace of mind to both players and developers that their data is secure for the long haul.

You can read more about zheap and the path CYBERTEC is taking to implement it within PostgreSQL in their latest blog post. We’re excited to partner with yet another company that believes in open-source and giving back to the community so that we can all build more together.
